If you wish to top off the St. Patrick’s weekend celebration, Southern Tier Actors Read (S.T.A.R.) has a great way to do it. The group is gearing up for its 5th annual Irish show, and this year’s will be more fun than ever!
S.T.A.R., known for its full length dramatic and comedic readings of plays, will depart from this type of fare this year, presenting instead an eclectic mix of songs, skits, music, and humor of the Auld Green Isle: an Irish Vaudeville!
The show will include songs sung in the Gaelic, a joke or two, and even a slightly ill-mannered (i.e., naughty) puppet “Darren B. Bear!” Now that’s something you don’t see every day!
Joe Bardales will serve as the Master of Ceremonies, and will introduce S.T.A.R. members: Judy McMahon, Mickey Ray (and his puppet), Tony Villecco, John Carey, John Montgomery, Mark Harding, Bonnie DeForest, Suzanne Santer Brigham, Caitlin McNichol, John Carroll, Timothy Bridgeman, and Nancy Oliveri. Musicians Barbara Garges, Charlene Thomson, and Jeff Bronfeld will also perform and entertain.
Said Judy McMahon, a co-founder of the group, “We’re having so much fun putting this show together. We’ve done the great Irish plays, ‘Translations’ and ‘The Playboy of the Western World’ and last year, we even did an adaptation of a long form poem from 18th c. Irish literature, ‘The Midnight Court’ by Brian Merriman. We wanted to pivot this year to some much-needed frivolity, and this variety show is just the ticket!”
The show will be at the beautiful ballroom of the Phelps Mansion/Museum, 191 Court St., Binghamton, on Saturday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 19, at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15.00 and can be reserved by calling the Phelps at 607-772-4873 or purchased at the door. Soft drinks and snacks will be available.
