SUMMARY:History Forge
DESCRIPTION:HistoryForge: Crowdsourcing Local History\nAre you interested in local history and want to help preserve it? Come learn about HistoryForge\, a community-sourced digital mapping project hosted by Binghamton University. Community volunteers transcribe census records on the website\, which in turn get plotted onto an interactive\, digital map. We have started with the 1910 census and have transcribed over 10\,000 census records. We’re currently working on Binghamton’s Third Ward\, though we hope in the future to incorporate Johnson City\, Endicott\, and other towns in Broome County. Our free transcription sessions are a great place to meet like-minded history enthusiasts\, and food and drinks are provided. Anyone can learn how to do this as long as you have a computer\, an internet connection\, and the ability to read cursive (or an interest in learning how to do so!).\n\nPlease make sure to bring your laptop with you to this event.\nIf you have any questions reach out to the Project Coordinator\, Mary Tuttle: mtuttle@binghamton.edu\nAdmission is FREE – no registration necessary.

SUMMARY:The American Revolution in Broome County
DESCRIPTION:Mark’s presentation will examine the American Revolution through the lens of Broome County. While many local residents are familiar with the 1779 Sullivan Expedition\, today’s talk explores the broader frontier conflict\, which includes the 1778 raids on Unadilla and Onaquaga. His presentation utilizes primary sources—including sketches and journal excerpts from the participants themselves—to trace the wartime routes of Clinton and Sullivan through modern-day Broome County. \nFinally\, the talk examines the local human legacy of the war. Over 300 Revolutionary War veterans ultimately settled and are buried right here in Broome County.  Mark will highlight a dozen of these individual soldiers whose wartime records span major milestones—from the Siege of Boston and the Battles of Trenton and Saratoga\, to intelligence operations\, the New York frontier war\, and witnessing the execution of John André.  Their post-war experiences are equally tied to early American history\, whether as a suppressor of Shays’ Rebellion in Massachusetts\, the local land agent for William Bingham or proprietors of the Boston Purchase. \nAbout the speaker: \nMark grew up in Hawleyton\, attended Susquehanna Valley High School and Broome Community College\, earned his Mechanical Engineering degree from RPI\, and retired in 2021 after a 36-year career with BAE Systems and its heritage companies. Today\, he and his wife Sharon live in Endwell\, and he serves as Vice President of the Binghamton Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution\, through which he has spearheaded the grants for and installations of dozens of Pomeroy Foundation “Patriot Burials” historic roadside markers honoring our region’s Revolutionary War veterans. \nTickets here:

SUMMARY:Jeffrey Wahl: Exclusive Solo Recital
DESCRIPTION:From the West End to the Southern Tier – An Intimate One-Night Concert Not to Be Missed! \nThe Instrument You Thought You Knew: International Virtuoso Jeffrey Wahl Redefines the Recorder at the Phelps Mansion \nFrom London’s West End to the Southern Tier — An Intimate Gilded Age Salon Not to Be Missed \nBINGHAMTON\, NY — He has led the United States Navy Choir in ceremony\, headlined the Actor’s Church in London’s West End\, and performed solo at the Washington National Cathedral. On Sunday\, September 13\, 2026\, at 3:00 PM\, world-renowned recorder virtuoso Jeffrey R. Wahl brings his international artistry home to the historic ballroom of the Phelps Mansion Museum. \nAccompanied by celebrated Binghamton pianist John Isenberg\, Wahl will guide the audience through four centuries of music. The program is designed to shatter the modern “classroom” perception of the recorder\, moving from haunting 17th-century variations by Jacob van Eyck to the high-energy\, jazz-infused crossover sounds of Claude Bolling. \n“The recorder is an instrument of astonishing range\, yet it is often misunderstood\,” says Wahl. “This program takes the listener on a journey from the 1600s to the present day. Performing in a setting as historically rich as the Phelps Mansion allows this music to resonate in its intended atmosphere.” \nThe afternoon’s highlights include Richard Harvey’s formidable Concerto Incantato\, showcasing multiple members of the recorder family from the piercing Sopranino to the haunting Tenor\, alongside Peter Hope’s Sonata. The program concludes with high-energy jazz selections that bring an unexpected electricity to the historic venue—a nod to Wahl’s work as the founder of The Claude Bolling Jazz Experience in Concert. \nEvent Details: \nDate/Time: Sunday\, September 13\, 2026\, at 3:00 PM \nLocation: Phelps Mansion Museum\, 191 Court St\, Binghamton\, NY \nAdmission: $35 in advance / $40 at the door. \nSeating:  limited due to the intimate nature of the ballroom. \nTickets: Available at www.phelpsmansion.org or by calling the museum at (607) 722-4873. \nAbout Jeffrey R. Wahl \nJeffrey R. Wahl is a professional musician\, conductor\, and theatrical director whose career spans the international stage\, the orchestra pit\, and the film industry. As Founder and Artistic Director of the Binghamton Baroque Orchestra\, he has established an international reputation for both pedagogy and virtuosity. A retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer and former “Mr. Dance of the USA\,” Wahl’s diverse background informs a dynamic “crossover” performance style that bridges classical tradition and contemporary jazz. \nAbout John Isenberg \nAn Endicott native\, pianist John Isenberg has been a cornerstone of the Binghamton University Music Department since 2011\, serving as a vocal coach\, accompanist\, and opera collaborator. His extensive career includes over a decade as Staff Pianist and Chorus Master for Tri-Cities Opera\, as well as annual performances at the Songe d’été en musique festival in Québec. Isenberg is a frequent collaborator of Jeffrey Wahl\, having previously been featured as a harpsichord soloist with the Binghamton Baroque Orchestra. \nAbout the Phelps Mansion Museum \nThe Phelps Mansion Museum is a premier example of Gilded Age architecture in Binghamton\, NY. Built in 1870\, the mansion serves as a cultural hub for the Southern Tier\, hosting tours\, educational programs\, and high-caliber musical performances. \n\n\n\nBuy Now \n

SUMMARY:Death and Mourning in the 19th Century Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore the Phelps Mansion Museum after dusk and discover the Gilded Age’s complicated relationship with death during a special candle-lit tour. Going room by room\, you’ll learn about the era’s funeral customs\, mourning rituals\, and the superstitions that shaped how Americans faced mortality and experience over 100 unique and authentic objects. \nMark Twain once called death “the impartial friend… the immortal who treats us all alike.” In the late 19th century\, that impartial friend visited often — and people responded by building an entire culture around it. Postmortem photographs\, special coffins\, mourning dress\, unsettling tales like Shadows from the Walls of Death\, and old beliefs (did three knocks at the door really mean death was coming?) all flourished during this time. In many parlors\, you’d find a wreath woven from the hair of a deceased loved one — displayed for visitors\, and doubling as a kind of family tree passed down through generations. \nJoin us to learn how a culture confronted\, mourned\, and memorialized its dead. Please note that tours run about 1.5 hours and involve standing for most of that time. \nTickets:\n$20 for museum members\n$25 for not-yet-members \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:The Revolution and the Creation of American Music
DESCRIPTION:The Revolution and the Creation of American Music\nBefore 1776\, American music was British music — because America was British. But the Revolution didn’t just create a new nation; it sparked the search for a new national identity\, and music was at the heart of it! \nThis talk traces how\, in the decades following independence\, a distinctly American musical style began to take shape — moving well beyond the familiar strains of Yankee Doodle to explore the songs\, sounds\, and traditions that newly minted Americans actually lived with. What did people sing at home\, at church\, at taverns\, and in the streets as they figured out what did it mean to be American? \nAbout the speaker: Matt Hollis has an MA in Early American history and has a deep interest in music and its history. He has published an edited collection of Revolutionary Era correspondence of Brigadier General Peter Gansevoort\, Jr.\, who defended Fort Schuyler from the British in 1777. \nTickets: $15 for not-yet members | $10 for members \nPurchase your ticket!
