ABOUT

The Phelps Mansion Museum and Water Street Brewing are well aware that we are in the midst of the 100th anniversary for two major events in American History. Both have changed American civil liberties and national identity. On May 25th the Phelps Museum will be at Water Street Brewing to discuss Women’s Suffrage and the entry into World War I as part of the History Happy Hour program.

In April 1917, America entered what is now known as World War One.  The war had raged for several years, but naval incidents made our pacifism less popular. By the end of the war, in November 1918, the horrors of modern warfare became evident with the return of American servicemen. The war also was a factor in the influenza outbreak in October 1918 that ended the lives of many Americans, changing attitudes towards government-mandated public health measures.

The Suffrage campaign of 1917 was a very antagonistic movement by both Suffrage and Anti-Suffrage movements. The further west one went, the more support the Suffrage movement had. Broome County had an active movement that included support from local businesses.

DETAILS

On May 25th, the popular History Happy Hour of the Phelps Mansion Museum will be held at Water Street Brewery. The Happy Hour will be at the usual 6 p.m., but events such as a Suffrage demonstration will be held during various times in the afternoon. The evening event will include short presentations about Suffrage and Broome County projects that supported the war effort, and a trivia contest about suffrage on local, New York State, and national levels. The winning team will receive a free beverage for each team member a future History Happy Hour of their choice.

For additional information on this special History Happy Hour or to pre-register your trivia team, contact the Phelps Mansion Museum at 607-722-4873.  You can also visit the museum’s website at www.PhelpsMansionMuseum.org for additional information on the activities to be held throughout the day.  The Phelps Mansion Museum is located at 191 Court Street (next to the Broome County library). The museum offers a wide array of historical and arts-related programming throughout the year. The museum is a member supported non-profit educational institution that aims to help visitors better understand the importance of the Gilded Age (1870-1893) in the growth of the Southern Tier and beyond.  Individuals who are not able to attend the Happy Hour but who would like to help support the efforts of the museum are encouraged to visit PhelpsMansion.org to learn more about how you can help keep history alive.
