SUMMARY:Women's Experience of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The story of the American Revolution is often told through military victories\, declarations\, and political change. Yet\, beyond the battlefields and meeting halls\, women across the colonies were also experiencing the Revolution at home. \nThis talk examines the wartime letters exchanged between women and their husbands to explore what life looked like on the home front in Revolutionary New England. These intimate writings reveal how women sustained households\, adapted to shifting responsibilities\, and coped with long stretches of separation while their husbands were away at war. In their letters\, women wrote candidly about their struggles\, fears\, and frustrations about life at home. In doing so\, they shaped their husbands’ decisions\, advocated for their families’ needs\, and gained new influence in their marriages. By centering these experiences\, this talk paints a fuller picture of the American Revolution as not only the cornerstone of our national origin story\, but also a deeply intimate and profoundly human one. \nAbout the speaker: Alyssa Frysinger recently earned her M.A. in History from Binghamton University\, where she specialized in early American women’s history. She currently volunteers at Phelps Mansion Museum\, leading tours and researching local history. Her previous internship at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum included research on the All-American Girls’ Professional Baseball League\, which she recently presented in Cooperstown.  \nTickets $15 Not-yet-members | $10 Members \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:History Hour- Stitched Together: A history of the Norwich Knitting Co. and Walt Disney
DESCRIPTION:Stitched Together: A History of the Norwich Knitting Co and Walt Disney \nLong before Hollywood became a global merchandising empire\, a small manufacturer in Norwich struck a deal that changed the entertainment industry forever. “Stitched Together” reveals the fascinating\, untold history of how the Norwich Knitting Company partnered with a young\, struggling Walt Disney to launch the world’s very first Mickey Mouse apparel. The author will share how an industrial pioneer kept his business afloat during the height of the Great Depression\, bringing a pie-eyed cartoon icon straight from the silver screen into the fabric of American homes. Join us for an intriguing journey through the secret alliance that helped save a local workforce while birthing modern Disney merchandising. \nAbout the author/presenter: \nChristian Vischi graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English and communications from the State University of New York at Potsdam\, with dual minors in jazz performance and French. Upon graduation\, he was recruited to a locally owned newspaper with both daily and weekly publications. He quickly assumed the editor’s chair of the weekly Gazette and then transitioned to a regional editor position for a large daily paper in New York’s North Country. After two years he returned to Central New York\, spending five years each in municipal government administration\, in communications at the Upper New York Conference of The United Methodist Church\, and Clear Path for Veterans\, a veterans’ services organization supporting service members across 33 counties in New York. After three years at a global\, private\, for-profit manufacturer of materials science\, Vischi joined the Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Colgate University as assistant director. He is the chairperson of the Campus Venture Initiative\, a certifying body for student ventures to operate on-campus\, and a member of the Colgate Hello steering committee\, which strives to create a culture of welcome\, access\, community\, and development for all employees. Vischi is a certified master gardener\, USASBE Social Entrepreneurship certified\, and a privately contracted graphic designer. \nReserve here:

SUMMARY:History Forge
DESCRIPTION:HistoryForge: Crowdsourcing Local History\nAre you interested in local history and want to help preserve it? Come learn about HistoryForge\, a community-sourced digital mapping project hosted by Binghamton University. Community volunteers transcribe census records on the website\, which in turn get plotted onto an interactive\, digital map. We have started with the 1910 census and have transcribed over 10\,000 census records. We’re currently working on Binghamton’s Third Ward\, though we hope in the future to incorporate Johnson City\, Endicott\, and other towns in Broome County. Our free transcription sessions are a great place to meet like-minded history enthusiasts\, and food and drinks are provided. Anyone can learn how to do this as long as you have a computer\, an internet connection\, and the ability to read cursive (or an interest in learning how to do so!).\n\nPlease make sure to bring your laptop with you to this event.\nIf you have any questions reach out to the Project Coordinator\, Mary Tuttle: mtuttle@binghamton.edu\nAdmission is FREE – no registration necessary.

SUMMARY:The American Revolution in Broome County
DESCRIPTION:Mark’s presentation will examine the American Revolution through the lens of Broome County. While many local residents are familiar with the 1779 Sullivan Expedition\, today’s talk explores the broader frontier conflict\, which includes the 1778 raids on Unadilla and Onaquaga. His presentation utilizes primary sources—including sketches and journal excerpts from the participants themselves—to trace the wartime routes of Clinton and Sullivan through modern-day Broome County. \nFinally\, the talk examines the local human legacy of the war. Over 300 Revolutionary War veterans ultimately settled and are buried right here in Broome County.  Mark will highlight a dozen of these individual soldiers whose wartime records span major milestones—from the Siege of Boston and the Battles of Trenton and Saratoga\, to intelligence operations\, the New York frontier war\, and witnessing the execution of John André.  Their post-war experiences are equally tied to early American history\, whether as a suppressor of Shays’ Rebellion in Massachusetts\, the local land agent for William Bingham or proprietors of the Boston Purchase. \nAbout the speaker: \nMark grew up in Hawleyton\, attended Susquehanna Valley High School and Broome Community College\, earned his Mechanical Engineering degree from RPI\, and retired in 2021 after a 36-year career with BAE Systems and its heritage companies. Today\, he and his wife Sharon live in Endwell\, and he serves as Vice President of the Binghamton Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution\, through which he has spearheaded the grants for and installations of dozens of Pomeroy Foundation “Patriot Burials” historic roadside markers honoring our region’s Revolutionary War veterans. \nTickets here:

SUMMARY:Jeffrey Wahl: Exclusive Solo Recital
DESCRIPTION:From the West End to the Southern Tier – An Intimate One-Night Concert Not to Be Missed! \nInternational Recorder Virtuoso Jeffrey Wahl to Perform Exclusive Solo Recital at the Phelps Mansion Museum. \nHe has led the United States Navy Choir in performance\, headlined a concert at the Actor’s Church St. Paul’s in London’s West End\, and performed a solo concert series at the Washington National Cathedral. He has premiered original compositions at the International Poe Festival and taught master classes across Germany\, Canada\, Russia\, and the United Kingdom. Now\, Jeffrey R. Wahl brings his international artistry home to the ballroom of the Phelps Mansion Museum in Binghamton\, New York\, for one night only. \nThe Phelps Mansion Museum is proud to present Wahl in recital on Sunday\, September 13\, 2026\, at 3:00 PM\, accompanied by celebrated pianist John Isenberg. The program spans four centuries of music—from the 17th-century variations of Jacob van Eyck to the jazz-infused crossover sounds of Claude Bolling—all performed in the intimate\, Gilded Age acoustics of the Phelps ballroom\, the specific setting these works were written for. “The recorder is often misunderstood as a simple classroom tool\, but in the hands of a master\, it is an instrument of astonishing range\,” says Wahl. “This program was designed to take the listener on a journey from the 17th century to the present day. Performing this repertoire in a setting as historically rich as the Phelps Mansion allows the music to resonate in its intended atmosphere”. Highlights include Richard Harvey’s Concerto Incantato\, showcasing multiple members of the recorder family from the piercing Sopranino to the haunting Tenor\, and the formidable Sonata by Peter Hope. The evening concludes with high-energy jazz selections that bring an unexpected electricity to the historic space. \nTickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. \nGet your ticket now! Seating is limited due to the intimate nature of the ballroom.   \nAbout Jeffrey Wahl Jeffrey R. Wahl is a professional musician\, conductor\, composer\, and theatrical director whose career spans the international stage\, the orchestra pit\, and the film industry. As Founder and Artistic Director of the Binghamton Baroque Orchestra\, he has built an international reputation as both pedagogue and virtuoso. Wahl proudly served 11 years in the United States Navy\, conducting the U.S. Navy Choir at major ceremonies before medically retiring in 2015 as a Chief Petty Officer. His military commendations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal\, Navy Commendation Medal\, Navy Achievement Medal (2)\, Good Conduct Medal (3)\, and other awards. \n\n\n\nBuy Now \n

SUMMARY:The Revolution and the Creation of American Music
DESCRIPTION:The Revolution and the Creation of American Music\nBefore 1776\, American music was British music — because America was British. But the Revolution didn’t just create a new nation; it sparked the search for a new national identity\, and music was at the heart of it! \nThis talk traces how\, in the decades following independence\, a distinctly American musical style began to take shape — moving well beyond the familiar strains of Yankee Doodle to explore the songs\, sounds\, and traditions that newly minted Americans actually lived with. What did people sing at home\, at church\, at taverns\, and in the streets as they figured out what did it mean to be American? \nAbout the speaker: Matt Hollis has an MA in Early American history and has a deep interest in music and its history. He has published an edited collection of Revolutionary Era correspondence of Brigadier General Peter Gansevoort\, Jr.\, who defended Fort Schuyler from the British in 1777. \nTickets: $15 for not-yet members | $10 for members \nPurchase your ticket!
