Please join Dr. Chelsea Gibson for a conversation in the Phelps library on Saturday, April 11 from 12-1PM. Chelsea will be discussing a book from our library collection by George Kennan called “Siberia and the Exile System” (1891). The plight of Siberian exiles was an incredibly popular topic in the late-nineteenth century United States and actually predated conversations and exposes about the Soviet gulag system in the twentieth century.
Chelsea will talk a little bit about George Kennan, his trips to Russia, and how the book probably came to reside in the Phelps’ library.
You are welcome to check out the book before our conversation. You can find it & download a PDF for free from Google Books (https://bit.ly/3bUX3dy). (Note: we’re not reading the book, but you are welcome to!)
Chelsea also recommends that you check out the images George Kennan’s photographer took during their 1874-75 trip to Siberia. You can find them online at the Library of Congress website (https://www.loc.gov/search/?fa=partof:lot+13251).
This event is free. You can join us on Facebook Live at 12PM on the Phelps Mansion Museum’s Facebook Page.
