Sherman Phelps moved to Binghamton in 1854. He opened the Susquehanna Bank and served as the fifth mayor of the City. He was a strong supporter of the Union during the recent unpleasantness, raising funds for some of the local regiments, including the 137th and establishing Camp Susquehanna. He wanted to find a location to build a home in the city and after a bit of searching he located a nice property on Front Street. He had the two houses that were on the property taken down and work began on his new home. The mansion was completed in 1872-73.
The mansion remains much as it was during Sherman’s time. Certainly there have been changes along the way, shifting from gaslights to electrical lighting among other modernizations. Just off Sherman’s bedroom was a small room that he used as a dressing room. Over the years this room became more of a storage area. One of the goals for Sherman’s Birthday Bash is to raise sufficient funds to renovate the dressing room back to what it looked like in 1875. All proceeds and donations from the Birthday Bash will be used for the renovations. Between the materials, labor and the furniture and other goods needed for the Dressing Room the budget for this project is $5,000. We are seeking donations of cash and materials to help give Sherman a very special Birthday present. All proceeds from the Birthday Bash will be used to complete this project.
During the event the exhibit “Fashions of the Gilded Age” will be on display in the upstairs of the Phelps The Birthday Bash will begin at 10am on July 23rd. Dance lessons and children’s workshops. Special tours of the Mansion will be offered throughout the day.
The afternoon will feature more games on the lawn. A special ice cream social will be offer for guests to enjoy from noon to 2pm. On the front lawn of the Museum Gilded Age games and amusements will be available for guests to play.
After the museum closes for the day the ballroom will be set up for the Gilded Age Dance from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The evening will feature music and dances popular during the Gilded Age. Tables for eight will be set up in part of the ballroom. Major sponsors ($500 level) will have a table reserved for their guests. During the dance all sponsors will be publicly recognized and all donations for the Dressing Room renovation will also be acknowledged. Additional donations for the project will be accepted with the goal of raising a minimum of $5,000 to complete the renovations.
