The Phelps Mansion Museum offers many different ways to volunteer:
- Do you like public speaking? Become a tour guide!
- Do you like interacting with people? Become a greeter or help run our gift shop!
- Are you looking for community service? Come help tidy the mansion, clean up the garden, or do a few office tasks!
- Do you love history? Come help maintain our archive or research new tours!
- Are you looking to meet new people? Come lend a hand with our events!
- Are you an educator? Help develop school tours and other educational programs!
Junior Docent Program
Are you a student between the ages of 13 and 17 who might be interested in…
- Museum Careers (educator, curator, exhibit designer, conservator, etc)?
- Learning about history of The Phelps Mansion Museum?
- Working with young children in creative activities?
- Meeting other teens with similar interests?
- Enhancing your resume for college and job applications?
If you can answer yes to any of those questions please consider volunteering as a Junior Docent. Who are Junior Docents?
Highly motivated students between the ages 13 to 17 are invited to become a part of the exciting Junior Docent program. Junior Docents are museum volunteers who are trained to participate in family and children’s programming and to help museum visitors better understand and appreciate the history of our area. Junior Docents assist in a variety of programming including: mansion tours, special event tours, and children’s workshops.
Becoming a Junior Docent is an opportunity for teenagers to explore history, develop leadership, time management, and public speaking skills, while at the same time making a significant contribution to the community.
Selection is based upon application, teacher recommendation, parent or guardian permission, and an interview. Junior Docents are required to volunteer at least six (6) hours a month and are expected to remain in the program for one year.
